Aster and Lighter are both decentralised perpetuals exchanges launched in 2025 that compete hard on cost and list stocks next to crypto. The main difference is design: Aster is built around privacy, with encrypted orders and hidden positions on its own Layer 1, while Lighter proves its matching on Ethereum and lets standard accounts trade free. Aster tends to suit traders who want privacy, very high leverage modes and live campaigns; Lighter suits traders who want zero fees and verifiable settlement.
Fees come from our venue data, checked against each venue's docs on 11 October 2026. Aster charges 0% maker on its perps. Taker is 0.04% on general crypto pairs, 0.1% on a named list of "Group B" pairs and 0.0125% on RWA perps, with lower rates by VIP tier (Aster fees).
Lighter Standard accounts pay 0% maker and taker, but taker orders, cancels and edits wait 300ms and TWAP orders cost 1 basis point. Premium accounts pay 0.004% maker and 0.028% taker with a 140ms taker delay, and staking LIT cuts that by up to 30% (Lighter fees).
On a $10,000 market order at base rates, you pay $4.00 on Aster, $2.80 on Lighter Premium and nothing on Lighter Standard. For a maker-only trader, both are free at base rates.
Aster has four products: an order book for perps, Shield Mode (a simpler interface with order and position privacy), 1001x (one-click perps at very high leverage) and spot (Aster). Its stock perps cover US and Hong Kong listed shares at up to 50x, and Shield Mode adds EUR/USDT and GBP/USDT.
Lighter lists crypto perps and spot, plus real-world asset perps that trade around the clock (RWAs). Its market specifications list 43 single stocks, 12 indices and ETFs, 9 commodities, 7 FX pairs and a US 10-year Treasury market. It also runs pre-IPO markets.
At the time of writing (11 October 2026), Aster shows $1.34 billion in perp open interest, $544 million in 24-hour volume and $5.24 million in 30-day fees. Lighter shows $782 million in open interest, $938 million in 24-hour volume, $5.60 million in 30-day fees and $3.1 million in 24-hour spot volume. Open interest and fees come from DefiLlama, perp volume from CoinGecko.
So Aster has more money in open positions, while Lighter turns its positions over faster. Both have faced questions about volume. In October 2025, DefiLlama delisted Aster's perp volume after it closely mirrored Binance's (The Block), and free trading on Lighter makes high turnover cheap. Open interest and fees are steadier guides. See how to read volume and open interest.
Aster has two live listings. The Blackboard x Aster Trading Competition runs 10 October to 10 November with up to $100,000 in prizes and a $50,000 qualified volume minimum. Perpetual Grid 2.0 Liquidity Pool Mining pays up to 140,000 ASTER to grid bot trades until 25 October. Aster's referral program pays a default 10% commission you can split with the person you refer. Its staged airdrop points ended with Stage 6 in March 2026, reported as the last stage based on trading (Blockchain Reporter).
Lighter's live listing is Lighter on Robinhood Chain Points: points for perps trades routed through Robinhood Chain since 10 August 2026, doubled for Robinhood Wallet users. Its main points seasons ran through 2025, and its referral program pays 10% or 20% of the fees referred users pay on paid accounts. Browse more in points programs and trading competitions.
Aster's terms (updated 25 February 2026) bar the US, Canada, the UK, China, North Korea, Russia, Ukraine, Cuba, Iran, Venezuela and Syria. Aster says it may run limited identity checks.
Lighter's terms (updated 29 December 2025) bar the same list plus Sudan, Belarus and Myanmar, and Lighter says it collects no personal data beyond your wallet address. Campaigns can add their own limits: the Robinhood Chain program also excludes Singapore, the UAE and Switzerland. Use our campaign checklist before you join.
Aster is non-custodial and says its exchange runs on Aster Chain, its own Layer 1 with encrypted orders and one-time stealth addresses. Its audit page lists reports for its vault, Earn, asBNB and USDF contracts. In September 2025, an XPL pricing error caused mass liquidations, and Aster repaid affected users in USDT (The Block).
Lighter proves its matching and liquidations with zero-knowledge proofs verified on Ethereum, and users can exit directly through Ethereum (Lighter). Its audits page lists reports on its contracts and circuits. Lighter went down during the crash of 10 October 2025 and compensated affected users with points (The Defiant), and users reported slow withdrawals after its LIT token launch in December 2025 (The Defiant).
Lighter Standard, at 0% maker and taker, if you accept a 300ms taker delay. Aster is also 0% maker, so the gap is in taker fees.
Aster has more open interest; Lighter has more daily volume. Open interest is usually the better guide to how much money stays on a venue.
On Aster, yes: its Account Privacy setting hides balances and open positions. Lighter's docs do not describe an equivalent setting.
Lighter collects only your wallet address. Aster's terms allow limited identity checks.
