Binance and Coinbase are often the first two exchanges people look at, but they serve different places. Binance.com is the larger exchange by volume and runs spot, futures and options for users outside its prohibited countries, a list that starts with the United States. Coinbase serves the US, Canada, the UK and the EU through locally licensed companies. Where you live decides which one you can use. Everything below is as at 12 October 2026.
The Short Version
- US: Binance.com does not accept US residents. Binance.US is a separate company. Coinbase serves the US under state licences and a New York virtual currency licence.
- Fees: Binance publishes 0.10% maker and taker on spot at the entry tier, and 0.02% and 0.05% on USDⓈ-M futures. Coinbase shows Advanced rates only after sign-in and builds a spread into simple trades.
- Size: Binance's 24-hour spot volume is about seven times Coinbase Exchange's on CoinGecko.
- Campaigns: Binance has five live campaigns in our calendar. Coinbase has none.
- Record: both have paid large regulatory penalties.
Fees
Binance publishes its full schedule. On spot, Regular users pay 0.10% maker and 0.10% taker, or 0.075% when paying fees in BNB. On USDⓈ-M futures, the Regular tier pays 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker on USDT pairs, 10% less in BNB, and 0% maker and 0.04% taker on USDC pairs. A $1,000 spot market order costs $1.00, or $0.75 in BNB.
Coinbase does not publish Advanced rates on an open page: its help centre says you see your rates after signing in and on the order preview. For simple buy and sell orders, Coinbase's pricing disclosures list a Coinbase fee plus a spread built into the quoted price, and a separate 1% fee on simple limit orders. Coinbase Advanced has no spread. Coinbase One, a paid subscription, waives trading fees on simple trades up to a volume limit, but not the spread or the 1% limit order fee.
| Cost | Binance | Coinbase |
|---|---|---|
| Spot order book, entry tier | 0.10% maker, 0.10% taker; 0.075% paid in BNB | Advanced: shown after sign-in and on the order preview |
| Futures, entry tier | 0.02% maker, 0.05% taker (USDT); 10% off in BNB | Shown after sign-in; separate volume tiers for futures |
| Simple app trades | Not compared here | Coinbase fee plus spread; 1% extra on limit orders |
| Fee discount route | Pay fees in BNB; VIP tiers by volume | Coinbase One subscription; Advanced tiers by volume or USDC balance |
What You Can Trade
Binance offers spot, USDⓈ-M and COIN-M futures, options and earn products. Its futures fee page also lists TradFi perpetuals, and its Stocks Welcome Rewards campaign covers tokenised stocks and stock options.
In the US Coinbase offers crypto spot, commission-free stocks and ETFs through Coinbase Capital Markets, and perpetual-style futures that expire after five years and pay funding every hour. Those futures are also open in Canada and most of the EEA. Eligible customers in other non-US countries can trade perpetual futures on Coinbase International Exchange through Coinbase Advanced. Volume and Size
As at 12 October 2026, CoinGecko shows $6.47 billion of 24-hour spot volume on Binance and $907 million on Coinbase Exchange, each with a trust score of 10. Binance's futures exchange adds $29.4 billion of 24-hour volume and $34.0 billion of open interest. Coinbase's derivatives have no CoinGecko figure. Binance.US shows $10.7 million.
The gap matters most for large orders and smaller coins. See reading volume and open interest and the crypto exchange rankings.
Rewards and Campaigns
Binance has five live listings: the Spot Trading Tournament Season 4 to 16 October, with up to 400 BNB in token vouchers; the Binance Alpha STABLE Trading Competition and Hold RLUSD to Share $800,000 in XRP, both to 23 October; Stocks Welcome Rewards to 30 October; and the October Referral Tournament to 31 October. Regions vary: the tournament excludes the EEA, and Stocks Welcome Rewards excludes the US, UK and EEA.
We have no live Coinbase campaign listed; its sign-up offers vary by country. Read how to check a trading campaign before you join first. A prize pool is not a promise of a return, and trading to chase one can lose money.
Who Can Sign Up
- United States: Binance's List of Prohibited Countries, updated 5 January 2026, bars anyone located in, resident in or a citizen of the US. Binance.US is a separate company, BAM Trading Services, which licenses the brand, shares common majority ownership with Binance and holds money transmitter licences in 32 states and territories. Coinbase, Inc. holds money transmitter licences across the US and a New York virtual currency licence.
- Canada and the Netherlands: residents of both are on Binance's prohibited list. Coinbase serves Canada through Coinbase Canada Inc., with futures held at Coinbase Financial Markets (Coinbase).
- United Kingdom: Binance stopped accepting new UK users on 16 October 2023. Coinbase serves the UK through CB Payments, Ltd., authorised by the FCA as an e-money institution and registered for cryptoasset activities (number 900635). Coinbase says crypto derivatives are not available to UK retail clients.
- EU and EEA: Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. is authorised as a crypto-asset service provider by Luxembourg's CSSF, and derivatives run through Coinbase Financial Services Europe, a CySEC-licensed investment firm (Coinbase). Binance's prohibited list names no EU country except the Netherlands, but several campaigns exclude the EEA.
- Elsewhere: Binance.com's terms, effective 21 July 2026, contract users with Nest companies regulated by Abu Dhabi's Financial Services Regulatory Authority.
Regulation and Record
In November 2023 Binance pleaded guilty to anti-money laundering, unlicensed money transmitting and sanctions violations and agreed to pay over $4 billion. Its founder, Changpeng Zhao, pleaded guilty and resigned as chief executive (US Department of Justice). Binance publishes proof of reserves.
Coinbase settled with New York's regulator for $100 million in January 2023 over compliance failings (NYDFS). In July 2024 the FCA fined CB Payments £3.5 million for onboarding high-risk customers in breach of a voluntary restriction (FCA). The SEC dismissed its civil case against Coinbase with prejudice in February 2025 (SEC). In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support agents stole some customers' personal data; it said no passwords, private keys or funds were exposed (Coinbase). Its US derivatives exchange, Coinbase Derivatives, LLC, is a CFTC designated contract market.
Both hold your assets, so you rely on their security and solvency. Crypto prices can fall sharply, and leverage magnifies losses.
Which Fits Which Trader
- US residents: Coinbase, or Binance.US as its own separate company. Binance.com is not open to you.
- Futures traders outside the US, UK and EEA who want published fees and the deepest order books: Binance.
- UK and EU traders who want a locally authorised firm: Coinbase.
- Traders who want stocks and crypto in one US account: Coinbase.
- Campaign hunters: Binance, after checking each campaign's region exclusions.

Questions and answers
Can I use Binance in the US?
Not Binance.com. Its List of Prohibited Countries, updated 5 January 2026, bars anyone located in, resident in or a citizen of the United States. Americans can use Binance.US, which is a separate company, BAM Trading Services. It licenses the Binance brand and technology and shares common majority ownership with Binance, but has its own management and holds money transmitter licences in 32 US states and territories.
Which is cheaper, Binance or Coinbase?
Binance publishes its rates: 0.10% maker and taker on spot at the entry tier, or 0.075% paid in BNB, and 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker on USDⓈ-M futures. Coinbase shows Coinbase Advanced rates only after you sign in and on the order preview, and its simple buy and sell orders carry a fee plus a spread. Compare the preview against Binance's schedule for the order you plan to place.
Can UK traders use Binance or Coinbase?
Binance stopped accepting new UK users on 16 October 2023 under the UK's financial promotion rules. Coinbase serves the UK through CB Payments, Ltd., which the Financial Conduct Authority authorises as an e-money institution and registers for cryptoasset activities. Coinbase says crypto derivatives are not available to its UK retail clients, so UK customers get spot trading, not perpetual futures, on Coinbase.
Is Binance.US the same company as Binance?
No. Binance.US is run by BAM Trading Services, Inc., a US company that licenses the Binance brand and technology from Binance Holdings Limited. The two share common majority ownership but, according to Binance.US, have separate corporate and management structures. Binance.US serves US residents only, while Binance.com prohibits them. Fees, products and campaigns differ between the two, so check each one's own pages.
